We start our culinary tour of Montréal in Le Plateau-Mile-End. Here you can get fresh hot bagels 24 hours a day. There are two competing traditional-style bagel stores: Fairmount bagel offers more than 20 different varieties of bagels, and St.-Viateur Bagel owns several bagel shops all over Montréal. Yummy!
We continue our journey down St Laurent Boulevard towards Le Quartier Latin. On the way we can stop at Schwart’s, established more than 80 years ago, for one of their famous smoked meat sandwiches.
Next, The Main and the Quartier Latin are crowded with restaurants serving food from all over the world, including Portuguese cuisine and Chinese restaurants (in Chinatown); you’ll find options to suit any food cravings you may have!
For those with a sweet-tooth, you can take a longer walk to the Old Port of Montréal. In the summer, there are several food stands serving a diverse range of sweets. One Canadian speciality in particular can be found here…Beaver Tails. If you don’t know what Beaver Tails is, it’s a chain of pastry stands that sells Canadian fried pastry topped with your favourite sweets, from chocolate chips and whipped cream, to banana and cinnamon-sugar.
The epitome of Québec’s culinary delights is poutine, a traditional québecois dish that you can also find in the Old Port. Poutine consists of French fries, drowned in brown gravy and topped with cheese curds. It is quite a heavy dish to eat, so if you do manage to finish it, congratulations!
